Through the Lens of Truth
Every news story begins the same way: with a witness who feels compelled to tell others what they have seen. That instinct lies at the heart of journalism, taking what is witnessed and carrying it faithfully to those who were not there. Yet this has never been a simple task. Power can withhold information, propaganda can distort it, and selective reporting can leave audiences with a version of events rather than the truth itself. This year’s agenda for the International Press Corps, ‘Through the Lens of Truth’, asks delegates to examine these challenges, from correspondents reporting from active conflict zones and the press holding political power accountable, to journalists working in countries where telling the truth can cost them their freedom or even their lives. Layered onto these long-standing struggles is a newer challenge: deepfakes and AI-generated content can spread faster than newsrooms can verify them, blurring the line between what is real and what has simply been made to appear real. As this line continues to blur, we must question: how far can journalism be trusted to show us reality as it truly is?

I, Hiya Panchamia, am incredibly honoured to serve as the Editor-in-Chief for the International Press Corps at the Emerald Heights Intra Model United Nations 2026. I am a 12th grader with a profound passion for creativity, intending to pursue a career in digital marketing and filmmaking. I look forward to making this experience memorable and rewarding for all of you.
This year, the International Press Corps will explore the responsibility of journalism in seeking the truth, and presenting it. The IPC will also examine how information can be obscured by propaganda, distorted through framing, and amplified by emerging forms of digital manipulation while also questioning how easily facts can be separated from the narratives built around them. The IPC will look at the role of journalists in giving a voice to those often unheard. Through its coverage, the committee will aim to uphold fairness, context, and integrity, recognising that journalism is not merely the act of reporting what happened, but the responsibility of ensuring that what is reported allows others to understand what truly happened.
