One of the most controversial subjects in today's international politics is the issue of unilateral foreign military interventions especially in politically unstable regions like the Middle East and North Africa. Although these interventions are frequently justified based on strategic necessity or humanitarian protection, they lead to far more intricate outcomes. In many cases, interventions carried out without collective international support have led to serious concerns including shifts in internal power balances, deepening conflicts, and in some cases, they have ignited civil wars, resulting in prolonged instability in affected regions. Such consequences bring attention to the issues surrounding these unilateral interventions, especially regarding their justification and their effect on state sovereignty. This makes it vital to closely examine how such actions evolve over time, particularly in terms of whether they contribute to stability or end up creating further challenges for the region’s overall security. Overall, the outcomes of such interventions highlight that unilateral foreign military actions often lead to consequences beyond their immediate aims. Their impact on sovereignty, internal stability, and region.
Shashwat Maheshwari & Manasvi Surana
Chairperson, DISEC

We, Shashwat Maheshwari and Manasvi Surana are honoured to serve as the co-chairpersons of the Disarmament and International Security Committee at this year's Emerald Heights Model United Nations Conference. Our interests lie at the crossroads of feminism, history, geo-politics and finance. To us, the best way to predict the future is to create it, and we carry this belief into this committee, where dialogue, strategy, and foresight shall present constructive solutions for alarming global issues.
In recent years, unilateral military interventions have moved to the forefront of global security discourse. Within an increasingly fragmented international order, such interventions have often been employed as instruments of strategic policy, frequently carrying significant humanitarian costs. DISEC, as the First Committee of the General Assembly, holds a critical mandate and thus must address these issues through cooperation and sustained dialogue. It is crucial that the delegates introspect and analyse the impact of military intervention and the threat its weaponisation poses with clarity and depth.Collectively, the committee must formulate solutions that are balanced, pragmatic, and durable. We wish you all the best and anticipate a rigorous, engaging, and productive committee.
